Rutherford’s brilliance with bat continues, preserving body ahead of T20 World Cup

Sherfane Rutherford has been consistent in South Africa with Pretoria Capitals

Guyana and West Indies cricketer Sherfane Rutherford has continued his good outing in the South Africa T20 League.
Rutherford scored an unbeaten 42 on a difficult surface where his team defended 139.
The left-hander has scored 47, 47, and 42 in the ongoing South Africa T20 League. He also claimed 4-24 in one game, his career-best bowling effort in T20 cricket.
According to the 27-year-old, he is being cautious with his body; hence, he is not in the bowling line-up often.
“No, I’m not. I think I’m saving my lower back from bowling. So, yeah, once I’m scoring runs and the team is winning, that’s important,” Rutherford said.
Reflecting on his solid batting effort, he said it was about taking the innings deep.
“I think it was a tough pitch to bat on. One of the keys for me was just trying to take it deep . I think, from looking from inside, I know it’s not an easy wicket to bat on to start. I think the best chance for me was just taking it deep , and you know, I actually got to cash in at the end, and it gave us a good score. It’s definitely a good experience, because one thing it teaches you is to spend time and give yourself the best chance.
“As we know, these wickets are ones that you need to bat on and spend time on. I think once you do that – you saw that David Miller almost pulled it off – so, it’s important to give yourself the best chance , and anything can happen in the back end,” Rutherford explained.
Rutherford expects to be a key player for the West Indies at the T20 World Cup, which will be played in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026.
