“Safety cannot be compromised” – MACORP’s operations officer

…as company enhances employees’ safety skills

With the intention of promoting safety among its employees and beyond, Machinery Corporation (MACORP) on Friday awarded several employees who participated in a training workshop, which was aimed at providing knowledge on the importance of safety in the work environment.
The event was attended by the training coordinator of the programme, Miguel Oviedo; Chief Operations Officer of MACORP, Guillermo Escaragga;

representative from the Canadian High Commission, Anand Harrylall; and Canadian instructor, Rick Wheeler.
Chief Operations Officer Guillermo Escaragga addressed the graduates and encouraged them to practice safety precautions where necessary.
“I am going to urge you to put this knowledge to work, safety cannot be compromised. It’s important that we all have this in mind and preach and action this motto that safety cannot be compromised at any given time,” he stated.
Escaragga also revealed that with the introduction of new industries in Guyana, there is need for action to be taken to ensure that persons are skilled to deal with unfavourable situations and as well as being well trained for the eventuality of an emergency.
While noting that the inclusion of both men and women in the programme was commendable, the representative from the Canadian High Commission, Anand Harrylall added, “since the announcement of the oil find here in Guyana, there were many debates on how Guyana will benefit from the sector. This training is a tangible example of how Guyanese can benefit from the sector, by building human resource sector capabilities to access relevant industry opportunities.”
Meanwhile, during his brief remarks, Rick Wheeler highlighted that there were a few challenges during the programme but nevertheless, the quality of training required was delivered. Throughout the week, the participants were given firsthand knowledge on the various safety precautions as well as practical sessions on the use of safety equipment.
“The training this week was very intense. We covered a lot of information. We tried to get as much hands-on as possible and everybody getting involved,” he highlighted.
At the end of the ceremony, the awardees were presented with a certificate which is recognised by the College of North Atlantic, Canada. Presently, the company is planning to continue this initiative, to produce more safety trained individuals.
