Salvation Army donates hampers to flood-affected citizens
The Salvation Army Guyana Division in collaboration with the Jamaica Division on Friday distributed over 300 hampers to flood-affected citizens of Georgetown. Another 200 hampers were earlier distributed in Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The hampers contained food items, cleaning detergents, and sanitisers – representing a value of $4.3 million.
Minister within the Public Works Ministry Deodat Indar was present at the distribution ceremony and spoke of the Salvation Army’s unwavering support and presence in helping those in need.
“Salvation Army, the Guyana Division has always been working to do social work with people – with the less fortunate of our society…I want to congratulate them for putting this effort together on behalf of the Government. The Government of Guyana usually partners with the Salvation Army from time to time in initiatives to help our people,” the Minister expressed.
“Doing good – helping hands – are the things that constitute a brother’s keeper and the Salvation Army in Guyana has been the brother’s keeper for a very long time.”
The Minister thanked the organisation for their continued support and vowed Government’s support in their future initiatives in helping the people of Guyana.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Salvation Army’s Advisory Board, Edward Boyer commended the Majors that would have made the distribution possible through their efforts in reaching out to the Jamaica Division.
“I want to accede to the two Majors… who has made the proposal to Jamaica…sometimes it’s very difficult to get funding, but we managed to get this funding. And the two Majors here are workaholics. They went to Bartica and now they’re here and they gave out these hampers… the items inside (the hampers) are very worthwhile and I applaud them for the work they do in the Salvation Army,” the Chairman shared.
