Sans Souci Jaguars capture Birbal Contracting T20 title
The Sans Souci Jaguars have been crowned champions of the inaugural Wakenaam Cricket Committee/Birbal Contracting Establishment’s T20 cricket competition after recording a 55-run victory over Good Success in the final, played on Sunday at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground.
Asked to bat, Sans Souci Jaguars lost the early wicket of opener Zameer Zaman for eight, caught off Nazeer Mohamed with the score on 18. Medium pacer Wazir Khan then removed Beesham Moses for three, before Dellon Osborne and Nokta Moses stabilised the innings with a third wicket stand of 51.
Nokta Moses struck one four and two sixes before he was trapped lbw by Nazeer Mohamed for 22; but Osborne, continuing to play his shots, added a further 72 with skipper Siddiq Mohamed to frustrate the Good Success side, who added to their frustration by putting down several catches.
After Osborne was put down on 10, he stroked five fours and four sixes for a top-score of 70 before being adjudged lbw to Nazeer Mohamed; while Siddiq Mohamed was removed by Devendra Hansraj for a battling 31 that contained two fours and two sixes.
Derwin Daniels was then caught off Hansraj for two, as Sans Souci Jaguars finished on 157-6. Nazeer Mohamed claimed three for 14 off fours overs, while Hansraj took 2 for 16 and Wazir Khan took 1 for 25.
Responding, Good Success lost opener Tulsieram Ramadeen for 17, caught off Siddiq Mohamed with the score on 21. Then, with sensible batting that fairly steadied the chase, Mahase Ramnarine and Imran Khan put on 36 for the second wicket. Khan slammed two fours and one six before he was caught off Zaman for 21, while Ramnarine was removed by Beesham Moses for a 28 that contained three fours and one six, to leave the score on 62-3.
Good Success then lost Nazeer Mohamed for 03, Charles Benjamin for 01, and Ejaz Mohamed and Hansraj each for 04, as the innings went into decline. Vickram Ramnarine slammed two sixes in an unbeaten 21, but his efforts could best be described as too little too late, as Good Success fell for 102 in 17.5 overs.
Bowling for Sans Souci Jaguars, Zaman grabbed 4-17 while Derwin Daniels took 3-22.
Named man-of-the-match, Dellon Osborne of the Sans Souci Jaguars pocketed $10,000 and a trophy for his efforts, even as his team received a trophy and $50,000 while Good Success took home a trophy and $35,000.
Heera Sukram of the Sans Souci Sports Club received a trophy and $10,000 for being the best bowler in the competition, while his team mate Wayne Osborne collected a trophy and $10,000 for being the best batsman in the competition.
Zayad Ahmad of Sans Souci village received $25,000 for being the top student in his village (the winning team) at the recent Grade Six Assessment (formerly Common Entrance) examinations.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, CEO of Birbal Contracting Establishment, Abdel Birbal, lauded the WCC for staging a well-organised tournament even as he congratulated the winners, while Chairman of the WCC, Khemraj Surujpaul, expressed gratitude to the sponsors.
