Sawpit reach maiden WDCA final

― set up clash with Zeeburg SC

Sawpit Sports Club trounced Rising Star Sports Club by nine wickets to enter the final of West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) Independence T20 tournament.

Played at Belle Vue at the weekend Sawpit created history when they reduced Rising Star to 94-7 from 10 overs and completed a successful chase in 7.2 overs to qualify for their first final in WDCA competitions.
In Rising Star’s innings, Marvin Cheong top scored with 29 but Zaheer Khan (2-14) and his accomplices ensured they restricted their opponents to under 10 runs per over.
Zafar Khan hit a cameo of 39 which comprised of three sixes and four fours to propel Sawpit to 95-1. Cheong returned with the ball to claim one wicket.
In the other semifinal across at Joe Vieira Park, Zeeburg defeated Meten-Meer-Zorg A by four wickets. The latter team batted first and were routed in 19.1 overs for 105.
Zaheer Haniff and Mahendra Nankishore were the principal scorers with 30 and 22 respectively.
While T. Mohamed 3-10 and Richie Looknauth 2-20 were the leading bowlers for Zeeburg, who responded with 109-6 from 15 overs.
Amrit Rai top scored with 39 and was the only batsman to fend off Anil Sookdeo, who claimed 3-12.
The final and third place play off is set for January.
