School of the Nations student jailed for possession of ecstasy pills

Senior Magistrate Leron Daly on Friday sentenced a 20-year-old School of the Nations student to three years’ imprisonment after he admitted to a charge of possession of narcotics.
The charge against John Adams read that on February 20, 2019, at Princes Street, Georgetown, he had in his possession eight ecstasy pills which amounted to five grams.
Adams, who appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to him.
The prosecution’s case, which was presented by Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris contended that on the day in question, Police ranks intercepted Adams at about 21:00h while he riding his motorcycle along Princes Street, Georgetown. A search was conducted on his person and the illegal drug was found.
The defendant, in court on Friday after admitting that the drug was his, told Magistrate Daly it was for his personal use.
Nevertheless, the three-year jail term was handed down along with a fine of $30,000.
