A new basketball league will tip off on Friday, January 16, 2026, at various courts across Georgetown, following the launch of the Schools’ Basketball League on Friday at the Transport Ground Auditorium.
The new school league is the brainchild of national head coach Willon Cameron, who first acknowledged Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) for their school basketball structure and support but also noted that the league is taking a bit away from YBG as well.

“The Schools’ Basketball League is a coach-led, school-supported initiative born out of the need for more games for our youths,” Willon, who is the chairman of the league, noted.
Furthermore, Willon also highlighted that the vision is to go nationwide as the league grows in the coming years.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Ministry of Education’s Allied Arts Unit, Nicholas Fraser, shared that it is the “small” starts that are meaningful and what is needed to shift “momentum” into something great.
Vice President of the Guyana Basketball Federation, Jermain Slate, was also on hand to wish the league well, noting that the league has the full support of the federation. The league will run from January 16 to March 22, with each team playing 10 games.
