
Days after fatally shooting 32-year-old Ceton Mark Courtman in the head during an altercation at Sands Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Ormyous Vieira of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was arraigned for murder.
Vieira appeared before Magistrate Tariq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
As such, he was remanded to prison until August 13, 2026.
Based on preliminary investigations, Courtman of St Monica Village, Upper Pomeroon River, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), and the 27-year-old suspect, who is attached to a private security firm, were involved in an altercation during which the suspect allegedly discharged a round that struck the miner in the head.
The injured man was transported to the Aurora Gold Mines Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An inspection of the body revealed a gunshot wound to the centre of the head.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and is presently in Police custody. Police reported that a Tacenti .32 pistol, along with 12 matching live rounds of ammunition, was recovered from the suspect.
