Security guard denies murdering fisherman

A 12-member jury was on Wednesday empanelled to hear the case of security guard Marlon Callender who has denied killing fisherman Envil Pollard on January 29, 2015, at the Pritipaul Wharf at McDoom, East Bank Demerara. State Prosecutors Mandell Moore and Lisa Cave presented the State’s murder indictment before Justice Sandhill Kissoon at the High Court in Georgetown. Callender entered a not guilty plea upon his arraignment.

The matter was adjourned to next Monday when the trial will commence with the prosecution’s opening address. The defendant is represented by Attorney Lammy Singh. Callender was committed to stand trial at the High Court by Magistrate Judy Latchman in July 2016 at the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry.
According to reports, the shooting occurred following a confrontation between the two men. It was alleged that the deceased met his demise while fishing in the vicinity of Pritipaul Singh Investments Inc and it was reported that the accused was a security guard attached to that entity. The murdered man, who had resided in Crane Playfield, West Coast Demerara, was a fisherman for over 30 years. He was also a father of eight children.
