The shooting occurred on Thursday afternoon, leaving Junior Mohan, a 30-year-old security guard, injured.
Police in a statement related that both men are employed with a security service located on Sheriff Street, Georgetown, and on the day in question at about 15:30h, the two men were on duty at the hotel.
They were reportedly standing to the north of the main entrance when they had a disagreement over the cars that were parked in the driveway.
It was reported that the suspect got annoyed and pulled out his firearm, a Glock 19 pistol which had 10 live matching 9mm rounds of ammunition, and discharged a round, hitting the victim on his leg just over the knee.
A Police Corporal who was performing duty at the hotel at the time arrested the suspect and took possession of the firearm. The victim was escorted to the city hospital where he underwent immediate surgery. An investigation has been launched into the shooting incident.
Only last month Acting Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, issued a stern warning to private security firms whose guards are seen posing on social media, especially on “Tik Tok”, with high-powered rifles.
Hicken said there are instances where security firms would have their officers exposing large weapons while on duty, and this has the potential to create a hostile situation with civil society.
He said it can also have negative implications for Guyana’s tourism sector, as well as for the general safety of citizens.
To this end, the Top Cop has said there must be professionalism, especially when it concerns the handling of firearms.
