Senior Policeman who threatened to kill junior ranks remains on job
…as legal advice being sought
An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who had been captured in a video verbally abusing junior traffic ranks is still on duty as Police authorities await legal advice.
In the video, which has now gone viral, the belligerent officer, who was off duty at the time, was seemingly intoxicated as he threatened to kill the junior traffic ranks who were probing two minor accidents in which he was involved.
The incident occurred on February 22 at Broad Street, Georgetown while traffic ranks were questioning the senior policeman about two road accidents in which he reportedly was involved on the same day.
Acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine has said the matter is engaging the attention of the police, but he noted that the ASP remains on duty pending legal advice.
“There’s a process you have to follow even when an allegation is made…it takes a little time…I have seen the video, as disgusting as it is,” he told media operatives on Monday morning at the Police Officers’ Training Centre.
Ramnarine said the Police Service Commission (PSC) would also have a role to play in the matter, since the officer is a gazetted member of the Force.
In the video, the traffic ranks were jotting down information in their notepads when the ASP erupted in aggression and began threatening the officers.
“If me had it me way, you won’t be a f@$#&*% recruit or a Police! Find out ’bout me! I would murder you $%@&* to the ground!” he said.
All the while, the traffic ranks were telling the abusive policeman to “desist from cursing at me.”
According to the citizen who recorded and uploaded the video to social media, the senior policeman was allowed to walk around like nothing was wrong when they arrived at the Brickdam Police Station.
