Two Sergeants attached to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were in the wee hours of Thursday busted with 154lbs of cannabis at Coverden, East Bank Demerara (EBD) during a joint intelligence-led operation involving the Special Branch and Regional Division 4 ‘B’.
Police stated that on the day in question at about 3:45h, a vehicle bearing registration number DFB 1786 was intercepted with two occupants – the driver, a 31-year-old GDF Sergeant from Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, and a 42-year-old GDF Staff Sergeant from Linden.
They both are stationed at GDF’s Camp Ayanganna Headquarters. However, during a search of the vehicle, 22 bulky bags containing a quantity of cannabis were discovered.
The two ranks were arrested and escorted to the Regional Police Division 4’B’ Headquarters, where the suspected Cannabis was weighed and amounted to 154 lbs. They remain in custody pending further investigations.
Following the incident, the GDF stated “The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is investigating an incident involving the transportation of Marijuana in a service vehicle by two Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs), Staff Sergeant Adisa Higgins and Sergeant Colvis Sam.”
The release added that the GDF is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct among its ranks and does not condone any behavior that undermines the trust and confidence reposed in the Force by the public.
“The Force is fully collaborating with the Guyana Police Force to address this matter… And wishes to reassure the public that this incident is an anomaly and does not reflect the character and dedication of the men and women who serve. The GDF remains steadfast in its mission to protect and serve the people of Guyana with the highest level of professionalism and integrity.”
Only a few days ago, a 29-year-old male Police Constable from Linden was arrested after he was found with just over 21 pounds of marijuana during a roadblock.
It was reported that during an intelligence-led operation a white Toyota Premio car with License Plate number PYY 4027, driven by the Police Constable was intercepted at Garden of Eden Public Road, EBD.
The constable admitted to having narcotics in the car and as such, he was arrested and remained silent. The narcotics were weighed and amounted to 9.60 kilogrammes (21.1644 lbs.).
