Serious crime down 25.4% as armed robberies fall 16.7% in Division 3 – GPF

Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander of Division Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) Mahendra Siwnarine on Tuesday reported that serious crime in his division is down by 25.4 per cent for 2025 when compared to previous years.
He was at the time addressing the gathering at the Division’s annual Christmas Luncheon and Awards Ceremony at the Diamond Tip Entertainment Venue, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

Furthermore, the Commander stated that armed robbery also recorded a 16.7 per cent decrease, reflecting the sustained efforts of detectives, uniformed ranks, and divisional leadership working collaboratively.
He, however, attributed the reduction to intelligence-led policing, increased visibility, coordinated operations, and strong support from the community and stakeholders across the Division.
In terms of traffic management and public safety, the Commander noted that there is an increase in vehicular movement due to infrastructure development and changing traffic patterns.

He highlighted the continued efforts of traffic ranks in managing congestion, ensuring road safety, and enforcing traffic laws, particularly during peak periods and the holiday season.
The Commander, nevertheless, underscored the importance of strong relationships with the community and stakeholders, noting that public cooperation continues to play a vital role in crime prevention and detection.
However, Siwnarine reminded ranks that the ceremony serves not only as a moment of celebration but also as an opportunity to motivate ranks to continue striving for excellence, professionalism, and improved service delivery.
He commended those ranks who have worked beyond the normal call of duty while adding that those who were honoured have performed exceptionally during 2025.

He encouraged officers and ranks to remain focused, disciplined, and professional, with the aim of achieving even greater results in the coming year.
In looking ahead, he referenced ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects within the Division, noting that improved road networks and increased activity will require adaptive policing strategies and continued commitment from ranks.
As such, the Commander urged ranks to work diligently to ensure that Regional Division Three remains safe, orderly, and responsive to the needs of residents and road users.
Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Kevon Douglas was named the region’s best cop for 2025, while Inspector Heyat Chunia was awarded the runner-up spot.
Both ranks were commended for their dedication, discipline and consistent performance in the execution of their duties.
More than 120 awards were also presented during the ceremony across several categories, including Community Policing Groups, Station Management Committees, Sportsman and Sportswoman awards, and Departmental and Station-level awards. In addition, special awards were presented to various stakeholders for their contribution to the Guyana Police Force.
