During his presentation on the Division’s plans for the festive season, held recently at the Richard Faikal Police Training College, Murugaya announced that there has been a decrease in serious crimes within the division.
The statistics show that from January 1 to November 22 there has been a drastic decline in crime, as compared to 2015. There has been decreases by 50 per cent in robbery under arms, 71 per cent in murder, 28 percent in rape, and 7 percent in break and enter and larceny.
There has also been a 2 percent reduction in indictable offenses and 64 per cent decrease in summary offences.
According to Murugaya, one of the major challenges in the division is the accessibility to 4WD (four-wheel-drive) vehicles to venture about the backlands. Also more motorised boats are needed to help fight crime.
As a result, there is insufficient policing in the riverine areas. He also called for cooperation from the public in fighting crime.
However to tackle the issues associated with accessibility, a mounted branch will be established in an effort to increase riverine patrols, Murugaya explained.
Murugaya also assured of a closer relationship between the Force, CPGs and in fighting crime. He assured the business community that Police will assure tight security during the Christmas season. The division is currently under the command of Khali Parashram and Mahendra Siwnarine.
