For the annual flag-raising ceremony to usher in the Republic Day celebrations, the Guyana Police Force has drafted several road closures to facilitate this activity.
Hosted at D’Urban Park, Georgetown, the historic raising of the Golden Arrowhead will be viewed by hundreds of Guyanese on the eve of February 23, many who will assemble a few hours prior. As such, these roads will be cordoned off to vehicular traffic from 07:00h on Saturday.
In the drafted closures, there will be no entry west on Mandela Avenue and Hadfield Street, Mandela and Homestretch Avenues and no entry east on Brickdam and College Road, Hadfield Street and College Road, Haley Street and College Road, South Road and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, South Road and Oronoque Street.
Adding to that, no entry will be facilitated north on Chappel and D’Urban Streets, D’Urban and John Streets; and no entry south on Regent and Vlissengen Road.
For the Mashramani celebrations on Sunday, strategic closures will commence from 07:00h to facilitate the free movement of the parade throughout the Georgetown route.
No entry will be allowed east on Cowan and Camp Streets, Barrack and Camp Streets, Young and High Streets, Irving and Lamaha Streets, Woolford Avenue and JB Singh Road, Anira and Irving Streets, Laluni and Irving Streets, Church and Peter Rose Streets, North Road and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, South Road and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Brickdam and Old College Road; and Hadfield Street and Old College Road.
Westbound traffic will not be allowed at Woolford Avenue and Camp Streets, Dowding Street and Vlissengen Road, D’Andrade Street and Vlissengen Road, Da Silva Street and Vlissengen Road, Garnett Street and Vlissengen Road, Baramita Avenue and Vlissengen Road, Eping Avenue and Vlissengen Road, Camp Road and Thomas Lands, Hadfield and Chapel Streets, Mandela and Homestretch Avenue and; Mandela Avenue and Homestretch Streets.
Meanwhile, there will no entry north on Camp and Lamaha Streets, Parade and Young Streets; and no southbound traffic at Camp and Seawall Roads.
The theme for Mashramani 2020 is “Guyana Together – Reflect, Celebrate, Transform”. It is the country’s golden jubilee anniversary ever since the attainment of the republic status in 1970. Over the past weeks, there was a calendar of events from panorama, singing and dancing competitions launched to usher in the celebrations. A fireworks display will illuminate the night’s sky at midnight at the Stabroek Market.
