Shariff wins U-20 girls’ online chess competition

Sasha Shariff

Seventeen-year-old Sasha Shariff, reigning Women’s Champion of the University of Guyana (UoG), copped 5.5 out of a possible 7 points to win the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Under 20 girls online chess event over the past weekend.
Despite an upset loss to Marian Academy’s Adia Alphonso, and being held to a draw in a scintillating encounter with Aniyah Couchman of Queen’s College, Shariff did enough in her remaining five games to emerge victorious.
Angel Rahim took the second position with five points, while Mahalia Rajkumar was third. Couchman had two draws and four wins, but had to settle for fourth, while Alphonso capped off the top five with 4 points.
Anasie Fredericks, Italy Ton Chung, Kristin Xavier and Harmony Dodson were the other players who finished in the top nine.
Waveney Johnson, Nalisha Johnson and Jessica Calender were some of the big names missing from last weekend’s event.
The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) has been working to engage players of all ages in a series of online competitions.
