Shepherd, Swammy superb as Tucber Park humble West Berbice
BCB Pepsi 50-Over First Division cricket…
– Rahaman, Campbell shine for Rose Hall Canje
By Brandon Corlette
Guyana Jaguars player, Tucber Park Cricket Club (TPCC) skipper Romario Shepherd, playing in the Pepsi First Division tournament staged by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) — his first club match this season, even as the tournament approaches its conclusion — stroked a brilliant 88 against a West Coast Berbice side.
His compatriot Leon Swammy copped 6 for 17 as TPCC won the encounter by 123 runs.
In this match, played at the Bush Lot Ground on the West Coast of Berbice, Tucber Park, batting first under riveting sunshine, posted 188 all out, with superstar Romario Shepherd rocketing the ball to all parts of the ground as he plundered the bowling.
Compiling a scintillating 88, Shepherd was the main contributor with the bat. Nial Smith, batting at number 9, scored a brisk 20; and Garfield Benjamin chipped in with 15.
K Joseph, K Ramoo, A Dutchin, S Adams and S McPherson picked up two wickets each for West Coast Berbice.
Chasing 189 for victory, West Berbice were sent packing for a paltry 65. They had come prepared to face the wrath of Shepherd, but the show belonged to Leon Swammy. The Guyana Under-17 fast bowler ripped the heart out of the West Berbice batting line-up, finishing with career best figures of 6 for 17.
The consistent off-spinner Kwesi Mickle picked up 3 for 23 to polish off a complete team effort.
Rose Hall rises
Over at the Port Mourant Ground on the Corentyne, an exciting contest took place between Rose Hall Canje Community Centre (RHCCC) and Police. On a slow and dry track, RHCCC took first strike and managed to score 119 all out, with the power-hitting Michael Campbell scoring a solid 40, while the experienced Ameer Rahaman chipped in with an attractive 20.
The most successful bowler for Police was Michael Tyndall, who grabbed 3 for 25 with his aggressive left-arm spin. Michael is the older brother of former Guyana Under-19 speedster Sylus Tyndall.
The law enforcers’ reply got off to a nightmare start, with the deadly duo of Michael Campbell and Ameer Rahaman returning with the ball to destroy the Police batting order. The Police were bowled out for an embarrassing 82, with T Drakes top scoring with 35 and G Grant scoring 25.
The off-spinner Rahaman had magical figures of 4 for15, while fast bowler Campbell swung the ball brilliantly to end with figures of 4 for 25. Rose Hall Canje Community Centre (RHCCC) defeated Police by 37 runs.
This is the Rose Hall Canje team’s first time playing in a First Division tournament, and they competed brilliantly throughout the tournament.
