A 46-year-old shop owner appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was not required to plead to a murder charge that was recorded against him.
Troy Wharton of Lot 198 Wisrock Housing Scheme, Wismar, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), is accused of killing Mark Jacobus on May 31, 2019, at Kuribrong Landing, Region Nine.
The accused was represented by Attorney-at-Law Trenton Lake, who requested the court to provide any evidence in the matter since he was surprised that his client was charged for manslaughter instead.
Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels stated that on the day in question, at Karibrong Landing, the now dead man was imbibing alcohol at a shop owned by the accused during which he requested credit but was refused.
At that point, the now dead man reportedly attempted to enter the shop and in retaliating, the owner armed himself with a cutlass and dealt the man several chops about the body. He was rushed to a health centre where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The prosecutor also revealed that the investigator reported that the now dead man was armed with a gun.
However, Wharton was remanded to prison and his next court appearance is slated at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on June 14, 2019.
