Shopkeeper slapped with illegal gun, ammo charges

Ricoldio Kyte, a shopkeeper of Nutmeg Street, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared on Friday before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty to answer a charge detailing that on July 30th last, at Meloge Landing, Cuyuni River, he had in his possession a 12-gauge shotgun and matching ammunition while not being the holder of a firearm licence in force at the time.
Police Prosecutor Adduni Innis related to the court that on the day in question, at about 11:15h, Police, acting on information received, went to the location where Kyte resides and operates his business and carried out a search. In the bedroom area of the establishment, they found the gun and matching ammunition.
Kyte was told of the offence and, under caution, admitted to ownership of the items found. He was thus arrested, and later charged.
When given opportunity to address the court, Kyte explained, “I was a ranger at my father’s place. Recently, we were robbed, and they carry away all our gold; so I purchased the gun to protect my father’s interest and myself.”
He also said he has been working in the interior for the past seven years, and is about to get married.
After admitting to being in possession of the illegal gun and ammunition, he was found guilty of the offence, and will today (Monday) be sentenced accordingly.
