Corlette’s players to watch (Part 4)…

It feels like a fall from grace for Sachin Singh and Joshua Persaud. The talented duo were achieving at a high rate of success in junior cricket, but for some time now, they have encountered a rough patchNevertheless, this duo are still regarded as two of the most talented young batsmen in Guyana. Persaud has finished youth cricket while Singh has one final year to make it count.

Joshua Persaud
The 20-year-old Persaud played seven matches for the West Indies U-19s between 2017 and 2018. For Persaud, his West Indies U-19 stint was more of a heartbreak. He was forced to leave the West Indies U-19 World Cup due to the passing of his mother in a car accident.

Prior to that, the lad from the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), who once played for Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO), dominated the

ring of rivals at the club and inter-county levels. He also carried his success to the regional youth tournaments when he rocked the Guyana outfit. He has copped Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards with Guyana’s youth teams.
Persaud, who scored his maiden First-Division century against Police back in 2018, had a decent final year for Guyana at the Regional U-19 tournament. In six limited-overs matches, he chalked up 149 runs at an average a shade below 30 with a high score of 80*. Persaud has not yet played for the Guyana senior team, but the wicketkeeper-batsman has plied his trade in Trinidad and Tobago.
His most recent success came earlier this year where he scored a maiden century in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board National Premiership competition. In four outings, he had 338 runs. As Persaud thirsts for a senior call-up, he continues putting in the hard yards of work and his talent will take him to further heights.

Sachin Singh
A gifted left-handed batsman, the punchy Singh has also been a dominant force at the junior level of cricket in Guyana. He also transferred his success to the regional level; he has led the West Indies U-16 team and has played on numerous occasions for Guyana at the youth level. This lad, who plays for DCC too, was also selected in West Indies U-19 training camps, but he failed to make the final cut for the World Cup after a poor run of form.

Singh played for Guyana’s U-19s twice and is expected to rock the national colours again in an U-19 tournament for a third time. In his second year at that level, he failed to score significantly; scoring only 79 runs in the regional U-19 tournament that was played in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Sachin Singh

After chalking up big scores for DCC at the club level, and Demerara at the inter-county level, Singh has encountered a dark patch. He had rough U-19 inter-county and regional tournaments in 2019, but he still remains positive. Singh still remains one for the future.
