The trial in the 2020 elections fraud case continued on Friday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court with the conclusion of the cross-examination of former People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) elections agent Sasenarine Singh and the continuation of testimony from the prosecution’s witness, former PPP/C tabulation agent Beebee Anisha Mohammed.
During his testimony, Singh testified to collecting Statements of Poll (SoPs) duplicates from polling stations on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) and handed them over to a party representative at the party’s Freedom House, Robb Street, headquarters. However, he acknowledged that during his possession of the SoPs, they were never checked to verify any of the security features to confirm the authenticity of the SoPs that were handed over.
On the other hand, Mohammed’s testimony saw several objections from the defence attorneys, Nigel Hughes and Eusi Anderson, who contested a video compiled by the witness, which comprised a voice recording that she made of a Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) staff member calling out numbers from the SoPs during the tabulation of the Region Four votes in the March 2, 2020, General and Regional Elections (GRE).
Mohammed testified that the audio recording in the video was made at Ashmin’s Building but acknowledged that the visuals were added to the audio in a video that she created.
Mohammed is scheduled to be back on the stand on Monday when the case continues before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty.
Nine persons are currently charged with conspiracy to commit electoral fraud in relation to the tabulation of votes for Region Four in the 2020 GRE.
They include former Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Keith Lowefield, former Deputy CEO Roxanne Myers, former Region Four Returning Officer (RO) Clairmont Mingo, former A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Minister Volda Lawrence, former APNU+AFC Chief Scrutineer Carol Smith-Joseph, and former GECOM employees Enrique Livan, Sheffern February, Michelle Miller, and Denise Bobb-Cummings.
Among the offences these defendants are accused of committing are misconduct while holding public office, presenting falsified documentation and planning to manipulate Guyana’s voters by presenting an inaccurate vote total. These charges stem from attempts to rig the 2020 elections in favour of the then-ruling APNU/AFC.
