Sister charged for brother’s murder

Debbie Hansraj of Grove, East Bank Demerara was remanded to prison after being arraigned on Friday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for allegedly stabbing her brother, Vishaul Hansraj, to death between April 17 and 18 at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara.

Reports are that the 25-year-old woman and her younger brother had been embroiled in a dispute after she had reportedly injured their mother, and the deceased seaman is reported to have armed himself with a knife with which he attempted to injure his sister. She allegedly disarmed him of the weapon and used it to stab him twice. The siblings were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

A bleeding Vishal Hansraj was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre by their mother, Sumintra Brijmohan, and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

The prosecution informed the court on Friday that a total of 14 witnesses will be called to testify during the preliminary inquiry.

The matter is expected to continue on May 18.
