Skeete retains Independence 400m crown

The Leonora Track And Field Center was a buzz of activity over the weekend as young athletes showed up to compete in the Independence Track and Field Meet organized by the Guyana Overseas-Based Sports Association.

Athletes both old and new dominated the competition with a number of close wins, while Director of Sport, Christopher Jones, and Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Sport, Dr. George Norton, watched on.
Linden’s Deshana Skeete ran her heart out to regain her 400m title. Leading that particular discipline for a few years, Skeete ran 57.54s in the Girls 14-17 event to beat out her opponents. Kelize Smith (58.10s) and Adriel Austin (59.92s) took second and third respectively.
Prolific runner Daniel Williams suffered a bout of tough luck as he stumbled in his primary event, the Men’s 100m Open. Akeem Stewart took that race in a time of 10.48s, while Kevin Abbensetts (10.52s) came in second and Davin Fraser third with 10.56s. Williams eventually finished in fourth place.
Samuel Lynch, Tyrell Peters, Brianna Charles, Titus Webster, Tonya Rawlins, Jonathon Fraser, Tandika Haynes and Tiffauna Garnett all graced the podium at Saturday’s proceedings.
