Police in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) are investigating the death of a pedal cyclist, who was struck down on the East Coast Berbice roadway on Sunday evening.
Dead is 26-year-old Ganesh Ramlackhan of Number 11 Village, ECB. Reports are the accident occurred at Bramfield Public Road, a few villages away from his home.
According to the police, motor van GRR 3351 was proceeding east along the northern driveway on Bramfield Public Road when it was alleged by the driver that Ramlackhan, who was riding a bicycle at the time, proceeding the opposite direction, swerved into the path of his vehicle. The driver alleged that he tried to avoid a collision, however, the right-side rearview mirror came into contact with the pedal cyclist’s left arm, causing him to fall onto the road’s surface where he received injuries.
Ramlackhan was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His 29-year-old wife, Hemwattie Balkarran, has since told this publication that her husband was on his way to work when the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, his colleague, Kishan Anandtram, explained that Ramlackhan rode past his house and called out to him for them to go to work. He said that he was about 300 feet behind Ramlackhan when the accident occurred.
Anandtram said that the area had a power outage at the time, adding that there were two cars and a minibus on the road at the time.
“The first car passed with a reasonable speed. The second car that past was the car in front of the bus. I see the bus swing and go over the double line. The car that was in front of the bus had on bright light so, I only got to see the bus when it go out on the double lane…”
The eyewitness revealed that he saw the minibus swerving from right to left and then realised that other vehicles were stopping and had put on their hazard lights.
“I realised that there was an accident, so, I ride up and go. When I approach the bus, I see the rearview mirror break up and the bus over the white line and the boy cycle one foot away and the boy lying in the grass unconscious.
Anandtram said he assisted in placing his friend into the van to be taken to the hospital.
The father of three is said to have suffered head injuries and a broken shoulder.
His grieving wife said that she is now left with her three children with no means of support as her husband was the sole breadwinner.
Meanwhile, Police said that a breathalyser test was conducted on the 47-year-old driver of Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, but there was no trace of alcohol. (G4)
