The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded on Tuesday afternoon to a grass fire behind the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, with heavy smoke affecting homes in the area.
According to the GFS, two watercarriers from headquarters and a water tender from the Campbellville Fire Station were dispatched to the scene with their crews under the command of Leading Fireman Persaud.
Firefighters were using water from the appliances and the beating-out method to extinguish the blaze.
The GFS said heavy smoke was affecting homes to the west of the fire, but no structures were in immediate danger.
Occupants of homes in the affected area were urged to take precautions while smoke continued to spread.
Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed to minimise smoke entering their homes and to remain indoors, limiting outdoor activities until conditions improve.
The GFS also urged residents to pay particular attention to children, older adults, and persons with respiratory conditions.
It said that those experiencing uncomfortable conditions inside their homes were advised to move to an area away from the smoke.
Residents were further reminded to keep access routes clear and follow instructions from firefighters at the scene.
