…as 70 NDCs set to undergo standardised reconstruction
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand on Tuesday turned the sod for the construction of a new $40 million office for the Eccles/Ramsburg Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) on the East Bank of Demerara. Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, the Minister expressed that the overall goal is to reconstruct approximately 70 NDCs across Guyana.
“So, we have just turned the sod for the Eccles/Ramsburg NDC’s new building. It will be a modern facility catering to all the functions of the NDC, and that is the model we are implementing across the country to support the services that NDCs provide,” she stated. The new facility is expected to be completed within four months. Construction of the modern NDC office follows the demolition of a previously dilapidated structure, which had long posed challenges to the effective functioning of the council.

The new building is designed to provide a safe, efficient, and accessible environment for both staff and residents. Minister Manickchand emphasised the Government’s continued commitment to enhancing local Government systems and ensuring that communities are equipped with the necessary resources to function effectively. The Eccles/Ramsburg NDC serves a growing population along the East Bank corridor, and the new office is expected to significantly enhance administrative operations and community engagement.
