Nineteen-year-old Shirakawa Jhaint of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was on Friday charged for the murder of Venezuelan national Yocter Eduardo Gonsalves, who was stabbed to death at a popular bar at the Soesdyke-Linden Highway Junction on Saturday evening.
He appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge. As such, he was remanded to prison until April 12, 2022.
It was reported that Gonsalves, of Ideal Road, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was stabbed during an altercation with the suspect.
Police stated that on the day in question at about 21:30h, Gonsalves along with his brother and a few friends were at the bar consuming alcohol when the suspect approached them and a heated argument ensued, which quickly led to a scuffle.
However, during the scuffle, Jhaint reportedly whipped out a knife and dealt the victim one stab to his right-side chest, thus causing him to collapse to the ground.
After committing the act, and out of fear, the suspect made good his escape. The injured young man was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, quick action by the Police led to the apprehension of the suspect and subsequently the institution of a murder charge.
