A mother of four was killed and several others injured after the minibus in which they were travelling turned turtle on Friday evening along the Land of Canaan, Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Dead is 52-year-old Yvonne Mohan of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.
Based on reports received, at the time of the accident, the route 42 minibus bearing registration number BWW 4542 was being driven by 24-year-old Ronald Balgobin, an unlicensed driver of Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
Reports are at about 17:45h, the minibus was reportedly heading to Kuru Kururu on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway when the driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to topple several times before crashing into an electrical pole.
As a result, persons were tossed out of the vehicle as it toppled. Several passengers, including Mohan, received serious injuries and were rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where they were treated. However, Mohan died while receiving medical attention. Another woman, a pregnant mother of one, was also listed in a serious condition. She was subsequently referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Guyana Times understands that an elderly man was also admitted a patient at the medical facility. He was also transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The driver, who also sustained injuries, was treated and taken into Police custody. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
