They say any good parent would wish their child/children achieve more than they have in their life. That is exactly the case with Imran Ally, a cane harvester attached to the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s (GuySuCo) Enmore Estate.

A resident of Enterprise, on the East Coast of Demerara, Ally has always dreamt of his son, Joel Ally, becoming someone of worth and good standing in society, and of course, better his father’s achievements. Judging from the recently announced results of the National Grade Six Assessment, young Joel is heading in the right direction, and no one could be more satisfied and excited than his parents.
The 11-year-old, who has not yet decided on a career he would like to pursue, emerged as the top students of Enterprise Primary, notching up 532 marks and a place at the prestigious Bishop’s High School; one of the top academic institutions in Guyana.
“I studied hard for the exams, and I’m happy with my performance,” Joel said. The young top students expressed gratitude to his parents, whom he said are very supportive of his ambitions to succeed at school.
His father was obviously proud of the achievement. “Well, me wish he the best, and me hope he continue to do well in the future.”
Joel Ally was among of group of students who performed exceedingly well at the examination, securing spots at some of the country’s top secondary schools. Ronald Moonielall, with 520 marks, earned a spot at St Rose’s High, while Talia Andrews (513 marks), Wazim Abdool (512 marks) and Reshma Mohabir (508 marks) will all be turning out to St Joseph High at the start of the new term in September.
Another student with over 500 marks was Ezekiel Siland (503), who will start out at President’s College in the new term.
The achievements of these students were duly recognised by the school and the Enterprise Support Group of New York when the graduation exercise was held recently. Additionally, for the first time, the New York group also made a significant contribution towards the Enterprise Nursery School graduation.
All told, the Support Group injected approximately G$400,000 in cash and trophies for the two graduations. The outstanding students were presented with cash and trophies, while each of the students from the nursery school took home a trophy.
Over 175 youngsters from the two schools were recognised for their performance.
President of the Enterprise Support Group of New York, Anil Gopaul, addressing the graduates, told them to continue to put in the hard work and success will be theirs. He also commended the parents for playing a major role in the success of the students. Gopaul said the Support Group will continue to assist in whatever way possible to develop the community, especially the youth population.
Local Steering Committee member, Videsh Lall, who is a teacher by profession, also warned the students who would now pursue a secondary school life, to be cautious about the negative influences that they may encounter. “Stay grounded, because there will be lots of negativity circling around you; choose wisely and make the right decisions.”
Lall added the Enterprise Support Group of New York would continue to partner with the schools, since the aim is to encourage and motivate the next generation of Enterprise residents to aim for great things in life.
