Sonia Noel and WASD giving back to society for 50th anniversary

As part of fulfilling its dedication of giving back to the Guyanese public and marking the Golden Jubilee anniversary, the Sonia Noel Foundation for Creative Arts (SNFCA) in partnership with the Women’s Association for Sustainable Development (WASD) on Friday handed over 50 food hampers to 50 single-mothers from across the country.
This contribution to the mothers was part of the foundation’s 6/50 project, where a series of donations are being made, highlighting

Guyana’s 50th year as an Independent Nation.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony at Water Chris Restaurant, founder of SNFCA and local fashion designer Sonia Noel, said this is an ongoing initiative that she has taken much pride in being part of but since this year is monumental in Guyana’s history, she had decided to organise the project in such a way that would mark this accomplishment.
Noel added that since she is aware of the struggles of single-mothers and how difficult it is to get by daily, the initiative was pioneered to offer relief to these women. She said this brings her great joy knowing her foundation can help out in any way that it can.
The renowned designer encouraged all single-mothers to maintain their strength and continue to strive for success, both for themselves and their children.
“Being strong is the only option you have. I encourage single-parent mothers to continue to be strong and be the best parent you can for your children because they are depending on you.”
Meanwhile, one of the single-mothers expressed her gratitude to the foundation for recognising the need of helping mothers. She said this will indeed “make the mother’s day” for those mothers who have a tough time getting by.
Apart from this first leg of project 6/50, over the next three weeks leading up to the anniversary celebrations, the foundation will be focusing specifically on youths across Guyana and fostering their growth and development.
Noel informed that over the days, donations of US$50 will be made to 50 underprivileged children for the purchase of educational material. In addition, the foundation will provide 50 mentors to 50 young mentees.
The project will also reach out to the David Rose School for Special Needs where the students will be taught fabric designing. The pieces produced will be sold, and the funds will go towards development of the school.
For the elderly in Guyana, 50 churches across the country have been selected to submit the name of its eldest member who would receive US$50.
On the fashion aspect of the anniversary, there will be the holding of an exhibition for 50 fashion illustrations by Clinton Duncan.
