Sophia family terrorised

– robbed by armed men posing as Police

A family from B Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, is now traumatised after gunmen, posing as Police ranks, broke into their home in the wee hours of Wednesday morning and terrorised them before carting off approximately $1 million in items.
The robbery reportedly occurred sometime around 04:00h when the family was asleep. The head of the household is a security officer attached to Federal Management System.
Guyana Times understands that the family of six was awakened by a loud noise emanating from the bottom flat of the house and shouts of “Police! Police!”
Upon inspection, a light was shone into the face of one of the occupants of the house and he was told to lie on the floor while another man, who was armed with a cleaver, ran through the house and woke everyone.
The masked men reportedly ordered the family to lie on the floor. Soon after, the perpetrators began to assault one of the occupants of the house by hitting him to the head with the gun.
An elderly man was also beaten and kicked to his body several times. During the ordeal, the family members were instructed not to look at the faces of the men.
The other bandits went on to ransack the house during which they collected a mobile phone, a lap top computer and an undisclosed sum of cash. The men then escaped with a motorcycle belonging to the family valued at $400,000.
Speaking with Guyana Times, the security guard related “this has been happening in our area for a long time now. A lot of people complained about the same thing. In some cases, some of them were sprayed with a substance which caused them to sleep through the robbery.
The matter was reported to the Turkeyen Police Station and an investigation was launched.
