Sophia labourer sentenced to 4 years in jail for killing pensioner

A Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown resident Kenneth Johnson was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday after pleading guilty to causing the death of 72-year-old pensioner Joyclyn Joseph.
The YY Bent Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown woman was killed early Tuesday morning after she was struck down by Johnson’s speeding car (PLL 2838) on Brickdam, Georgetown, while on her way to uplift her pension from the Bourda Post Office around 04:30h.
The 35-year-old man, attached to the Cyril Potter College of Education as a weeding labourer, admitted to the prosecution’s facts which noted that he was racing the traffic lights before it counted down to the red light. He expressed condolences to Joseph’s family members, who were sobbing in court, telling the Chief Magistrate that all he saw was a shadow and that the pensioner’s killing was not a wilful act.
Reports are that the pensioner was dragged 147 feet and her left leg was severed before Johnson came to a halt. The pedestrian was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her cause of death was given as multiple injuries due to a motor vehicle accident.
Johnson was also found guilty of operating his car for private hire as Police found a radio set connected to a taxi service. He explained that he was “hustling” to provide for his wife and family. The defendant was sentenced to four weeks in jail for the second offence, and this sentence will run concurrently with his four-year sentence.
