A Sophia, Greater Georgetown resident was granted bail on Friday after he was charged with the attempted murder of his partner.
Forty-four-year-old Julius Arthur of B Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court where the indictable charge was read to him.
Arthur was not required to plead to the offence which stated that on July 1, 2020, at Number 30 Village, West Coast Berbice, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), he attempted to murder Devlin Garraway.
Garaway, 28, of Union No 30 Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB), Region Five (Mahaica-
Berbice), was shot to the head by the suspect, who accused her of being unfaithful.
It was reported that on July 1, the couple was heard arguing and suddenly the sound of a gunshot was heard. Upon making checks, a cousin, Shannon Marshall, found the injured woman lying in a pool of blood in her bedroom but the suspect, a porter of Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was nowhere to be seen.
However, the injured woman was picked up and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where she was treated but due to the seriousness of her condition, she was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was admitted.
Due to the constant abuse and allegations of infidelity, the woman asked to end the relationship a few months ago. After the suspect moved, the woman’s cousin moved in with her at the one-flat house in the Food for The Poor Housing Scheme.
The injured woman’s cousin told investigators that on June 30, she travelled to Georgetown to transact business but upon her return at about 17:30h, she saw the suspect at the house pleading with her cousin to reconcile.
He, nevertheless, spent the night but the cousin recalled that at about 10:10h the following morning, she was in her bedroom when she heard them arguing in their bedroom.
The reason for the argument was unknown but Marshall said she suddenly heard the gunshot, followed by her cousin calling her name.
“I run over and she was in a pool of blood lying on the floor… she was not responding so I called out to the neighbours who rushed over and we were able to take her to the hospital where she was admitted,” Marshall added.
Doctors have since detected a wound on the right side of her head.
Arthur was, however, granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and the matter was postponed to August 14, 2020.
