Sophia man stabbed to death during “bicycle” row

A late-night misunderstanding on Wednesday between two friends turned deadly during an armed confrontation the following morning.
Dead is 26-year-old Seon Harry, called “Shoulder”, of Plum Park, Block E, South Sophia, Greater Georgetown. The incident occurred around 08:30h on Thursday morning at South Sophia Squatting Area.
According to Police reports, Harry borrowed the suspect’s bicycle on Wednesday evening and after returning it after midnight, the two had a brief but heated exchange of words.
It did not end there. The now dead man armed himself with a cutlass the following morning and dealt the suspect, who does by the name “Ding Dong”, several chops during a confrontation. In retaliation, the injured man dealt Harry one stab to his body.
Guyana Times was told that it was ego that led to Thursday morning’s confrontation between the two men, who were friends.
This newspaper was told that on Wednesday night, another person known to both men picked up “Ding Dong”’s bike without his knowledge and then handed it to Harry who returned it.
Upon returning the bicycle, a heated argument ensued between the two men at a hangout spot during which the suspect became annoyed and threw down a plate of food that Harry’s girlfriend had on a nearby table.
The men were parted by their friends who were around and they went home.
On Thursday morning, however, eyewitnesses say that “Ding Dong” was hanging out with some friends when he noticed Harry on a dam charging towards him, armed with a cutlass.
“After Ding Dong see the man on the dam, he pull out a knife and tek off he shirt and wrap it ‘round he hand with the knife and run up to Shoulder on the de dam,” an eyewitness related.
According to the man, Harry took the first swing, inflicting three chop wounds on “Ding Dong” – one to his head, his left upper body and another to his abdomen. The injured man in turn then dealt his attacker a fatal single stab.
Close associates of the two men called the incident a “senseless act”, but noted that at the rate the two men confronted each other, it was clear one or the other would have ended up dead.
“A simple argument just escalate and turn into this situation here… is really rough ‘cause these two [men] were friends and now they gone and throw ‘way they life,” a man related.
Meanwhile, an uncle of the now dead man, Brentnol Harry, in expressing his grief on social media, said that his nephew’s death was tough to take.
“… Seon now turning [his] life around since [he] getting a ‘lil one on de way and to get dis news… only last [night] we spoke and [this morning] you gone,” the distraught man wrote on his Facebook page.
The body of 26-year-old Harry, whose girlfriend is pregnant with his first child, is presently at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
The 31-year-old suspect has since turned himself in at the Turkeyen Police Station and is assisting with the investigations. He had to be taken for medical attention to tend to his wounds inflicted by the now dead man. He is expected to be charged for the murder of his good friend. (Vahnu Manikchand)
