Sophia resident busted by CANU with ganja in shopping bag
A C Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown resident was on Thursday arrested after a quantity of ganja was found in her shopping bag while travelling in a minibus at Ann’s Grove Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Based on reports received, agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) acting on information intercepted a minibus bearing registration BMW 1587 at Ann’s Grove Public Road, ECD. The minibus originated from Berbice and was heading to Georgetown.
However, a female, Aatwanna Natoya McCammon, 20, of C Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was observed carrying a red, white and blue shopping bag containing a transparent parcel.
This prompted the officers to conduct a search on the parcel during which 1.174 kilograms of cannabis was unearthed.
At the time, McCammon was sitting in the front passenger seat. The suspect was told of the offence committed, arrested, cautioned and escorted to CANU’s headquarters as investigations continue. CANU has been working around the clock to put a dent in the drug trade.
Several cases were made out against cocaine mules and carriers. The agency noted that it will continue to work assiduously to curtail drugs entering and passing through Guyana.
