Sparta Boss ended an unbeaten run with a Championship title win on Saturday evening to become the Guinness Greatest of the Street National Champions.
The two-day event concluded with a Georgetown versus East Coast showdown which saw the eventual champions needle Melanie ‘B’ to suddenly become $500,000 richer.
Gregory Richardson’s 9th minute goal was the decider, leaving the opposition to settle for the runners-up prize of $250,000.
Prior to the finale, Gold is Money easily disposed of Brothers United in the third place playoffs, which ended 2 –nil. Hubert Pedro scored in the 8th minute, while Michael Pedro put the victory beyond doubt with a 26th minute goal.
Gold is Money’s effort endowed them with the $150,000 third place prize, while Brothers United, victors of the West Demerara/East Bank segment, claimed the $100,000 fourth place prize.
Earlier in the night, Sparta Boss squeezed past Brothers United 2–1 in the semi-final round.
Ryan Hackett drew first blood for Sparta, but Andrew Murray Jr equalised for the opposition in the 18th minute.
Richardson’s first decider of the night was crafted in this match when, in the 25th minute, he blasted a successful strike which propelled them into the final.
Melanie ‘B’ became finalists after a closely contested showdown against Gold is Money that spiralled out of control in the closing moments for the Georgetown side and ended 2-0 in favour of Melanie ‘B’.
After a goalless first half, Ryan Searles put his side ahead in the 19th minute, then Odell Gulliver made it a two-possession lead in the 26th minute.
