Sponsors believe Competition will be beneficial for youths
GCA launches Three Competitions…
The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) yesterday launched three competitions for the year 2019; namely, The Gise/Star Party & Trophy Stall Competition, Noble House Seafoods 2nd Division Competition, and the Noble House Next Gen Under-19, at the Demerara Cricket Club in Queenstown.
At the briefing, Vice President of the GCA Neil Barry said, “Today’s launching highlights the continuing partnership between our three sponsors and the GCA, which has spawned many years; and I am extremely grateful to all our sponsors, I am happy that they have created a developmental programme which will aid the players of Georgetown to become better at their craft. I must thank you for supporting us, and I hope this partnership continues to be a long and fruitful one”.
According to Barry, the launching will be showcasing the first division tournament, which is vital; the two-day tournament, which will commence this weekend with
some crucial fixtures; the Noble House Seafoods 2nd Division Competition, which will develop a lot of young players and keep a number of older players involved, so that they can transfer their knowledge; and the new competition, the Noble House Next Gen Under-19, which will not be an under 19 fifty over knockout competition, but will be focused along the lines of a 100-over competition wherein players will have to battle hard and work to get points.
Also present during the launch, representative of GISE, Verne Van Lange, said, “It is a pleasure to be a part of this tournament. With the coming of oil, we are hoping (that) in the next two years I will be standing here as the sole sponsor, in let’s say 2020 or 2021. We want to give the youths all the opportunities necessary; that is why we invest our money, because we want to use our platform to support them. Once again we are happy to support this tournament and we want to hope that this tournament leads the youth to the better choices that are out there. Work hard and the world is your oyster, you can achieve anything”.
Another sponsor of the tournament, Dwarka Singh of Noble House Seafoods, stated that the history of cricket in Guyana and the West Indies runs in the veins of everyone; that is why for the past seven years Noble House has continued to show their support. He also went on to state that he believes that cricket is something that can take youth off the streets and give them something to work towards, that is why they will always continue to support this format of the game.
In closing, President of the GCA and former Guyana and West Indies cricketer, Roger Harper, thanked the sponsors for their continued support, and said he is very pleased as he knows this competition will give the youths the necessary opportunity for them to become somebody and make this country a better place.
