Squires, Daly-Ramdyhan, Downes and Leacock among Trophy Stall winners

The ninth annual Trophy Stall Open Doubles Tournament concluded amid intense rivalry last evening. When the dust settled, it was the pairs of Phillip Squires, Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan, Anthony Downes and Leyland Leacock who emerged victorious.
The tournament which is continuously supported by Trophy Stall allows players of all ages to compete against their superiors in a test of skill. The tournament is contested in mixed doubles, women’s doubles and men’s doubles categories.
In the preliminary rounds of the men’s doubles, Phillip Squires and Joseph De Jonge capitalised greatly when they overcame Vadeanand Resaul and Jeremiah Kalekyezi 6/0, 6/1 in the quarter-final. Heimraj Resaul and Jordan Beaton had the same luck as they received a bye in the first round and then went on to defeat Mark Mc Donald and Ronald Murray 7/5, 1/0 to advance to the semis.
Joshua Kalekyezi and Viraj Sharma later made light work of Nicholas Glasgow and Orande Dainty 6/1, 6/1 to secure their semi-final spot as well.
Meanwhile, in the quarter-final round of the mixed doubles, Khalid Gobin and Donna Walcott came from behind to defeat Rafeal Nunes and Grace McCalman 1/6, 6/2, 6/4. Joseph De Jonge and Fiona Bushell overpowered David Rose and Dacia George 6/2, 6/2. Philip Squires and Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan then got past Vadeanand Resaul and Saskia Persaud 6/3, 6/2; whilst Afruica Gentle and Benjettan Osbourne overcame Heimraj Resaul and Kalyca Fraser 7/6 (2), 2/6, 6/0 in a hard fought battle to complete the semi-final pairs.
Afruica Gentle and Benjettan Osbourne got the better of Joseph De Jonge and Fiona Bushell 6/3, 6/2 to seal their spot in the final. The other spot was taken by Philip Squires and Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan who overpowered Khalid Gobin and Donna Walcott 6/1 6/2.
After two weeks of gruelling competition on the courts at Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara and the National Racquet Centre, Georgetown, the finalists were ready to battle for the top spots on Friday.
The men’s doubles semi-final was an impressive show where Anthony Downes and Leyland Leacock defeated Phillip Squires and Joseph De Jonge to advance to the final. Heimraj Resaul and Jordan Beaton were the other pair in the final after overpowering Joshua Kalekyezi and Viraj Sharma.
In the final contest, Anthony Downes and Leyland Leacock were the ones to reign supreme as they flattened Heimraj Resaul and Jordan Beaton 6/2, 6/2.
Over in the women’s doubles final, the pair of Cristy Campbell and Afruica Gentle powered to a thrilling three set win over Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan and Fiona Bushell 6/2, 4/6, 6/3.
For the mixed doubles final, experience prevailed as Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan and Phillip Squires were made to work for their victory over Benjettan Osbourne and Afruica Gentle 2/6, 6/3, 6/3.
