St Mary’s, Bishops’ bag wins in Milo U18 tourney

As the competition approaches the knockout stages, St Mary’s Secondary registered a critical win, as Queen’s College and The Bishops’ High School settled their differences on Sunday, when the Milo Schools Football tournament continued.

St. Mary’s goal-scorers

Queen’s College and the Bishops’ High, often regarded as academic rivals, set their books aside on Sunday and battled it out on the football field. With both teams eyeing a win, the nation’s top secondary institutions opted for an aggressive style of play as they pursued the goal.
Quite a number of attempts were made, but the result was often a missed opportunity of good work on the goalkeeper’s part, which made for a nil-all score line at half time.
The frustration heightened in the second half, but Bishops’ were the only team to capitalise, after they were awarded a penalty in the 43rd. Makayah Smith sank the ball deep into the goal to put the score at 1-0; and seven minutes, he extended the lead to 2-0.
Queen’s College went down without a reply, handing Bishops’ the win.
The second game scheduled for the day went uncontested, as North Ruimveldt Secondary failed to show. As such, Saints Stanislaus were awarded a walkover.
A worried but determined St. Mary’s Secondary put on an impressive team performance to shatter Marian Academy’s hopes. With both teams languishing at the bottom of Group E, the win was critical for either side.
Michael Ole opened the scoring for St. Mary’s with a well-placed ball in the 15th minute of play. Four minutes after, Jerimiah Softly-Springer extended his team’s lead, and later Joshua Samuels capitalised on a penalty opportunity to propel the score to 3-0, frustrating the Marian side.
Samuels returned in the other half to net his second goal, but was closely followed by Marian’s Ricardo Percival, who found the back of the net for Marian’s consolation goal.
Daniel Webster had the last say in the match, resulting in St. Mary’s 5-1 win.
The Petra-organised Milo Under-18 tournament will continue this weekend at the Ministry of Education Ground on Carifesta Avenue.
