Stabroek Eagles, UG secure wins; Ravens upset Pacesetters
The inaugural One Guyana Basketball Tournament, continued on Saturday, October 21 at the National Gymnasium with three games, in which Stabroek Eagles, UG Trojans, and Wortmanville Ravens secured wins.
The Stabroek Eagles annihilated the Lamaha Park/Springs Pepsi Sonics as they went up in the first quarter of the game to score 23 points while their opponents failed to get into double digits as they were limited to four points.
The second quarter was no different as the Eagles, who were deemed favourites, scored 20 points while their opponents failed to put the ball through the net consistently – scoring 12 points.
The third quarter was also beneficial to the Eagles, putting the ball through the nets for 25 points, while the Sonics slightly dropped in the same number of points scored in the second quarter, scoring 11 points.
They went on to secure the win in the final quarter, scoring 19 points, for a total of 87 points at the end of the game while the Sonics scored 10 points for a total of 45.
A glimpse of the basketball action
In the second game of the night, UG Trojans continue their form from the previous game after their first victory , to have a commanding lead in the first quarter against Leonora D-UP Rising Stars with the scoreline reading 22-8.
The Trojans continued to dominate the game in the second quarter, scoring 16 points to elevate their score to 38 while limiting the Stars to scoring four and their score, 12 points.
The Stars managed to put up a fight, but the Trojans’ defence was tough, with the Stars being limited to 8 points and 20 points in total at the end of the first half. The Trojans then seemed to calm down to score 20 points of a total 58.
The Trojans went on to secure the second victory in the final, scoring 23 points in the final quarter and their final score moving to 81 points while the Stars continued to put up a fight, but just missed out, scoring 11 points of their total 31 points.
The concluding game was the upset as the Ravens handed the Pacesetters their first defeat despite the Pacesetters starting the game showcasing their skills to go up 13-9 to end the first quarter.
The Ravens did not give up the fight to keep their composure to crown a terrific comeback, scoring 18 points to increase their score to 27 while Kwakwani were limited to 11 points with their score of 27 at the end of the first quarter.
The Ravens outfit showed their strength, scoring 15 points in the face of the Pacesetters’ tight defence to increase their overall score to 42 points at the end of the third quarter while the Pacesetters scored nine points to increase their score to 33 points at the end.
The game concluded with the Ravens showcasing their shooting skills, swishing the ball for 18 points in a final score of 60 points. The Pacesetters scored eight points with their final score, 41.
This tournament-winning team will pocket $1 million along with trophies, while the runners-up will receive $500,000 plus trophies.
