Home Sports Stanton Rose Jr signs with St Mary’s University basketball team
− now able to compete in NCAA Division 2 games
The name Stanton Rose Jr is a household name among avid basketball fans both young and old in Guyana. As everyone would remember, Rose’s career took flight when he led Guyana to its maiden Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) title in 2018.
This is a young man whose natural skill and talent caused him to distinguish himself when he played for Panola College in Texas, USA. In 2019, Rose had said it was his goal to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA), noting that it didn’t matter where or whom he played for, once the opportunity given to him allowed him to play for the NBA.
He had relayed that, to do so, he must play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-2, and with him now being signed to St Mary’s University, he will be able to compete.
In a statement, Rose said, “Blessed to announce that I’m going to continue my basketball and academic career at the St Mary’s University (In San Antonio). A big thank you to all those been riding with me from start and will be there in the end. Thank you, coach Aaron Smith, for allowing me to show my talent. Thank you, Coach Christopher Jackson Charles, I’ve learnt a lot from you in a very short time; thank very much, and I’ll never forget your teaching. Willon Cameron Hercules, Andrew Lugard Mohan, Chris Wayne Bowman, special thank you to you guys as well, because you played a major role in my basketball career. Michael Singh, thank you, thank you, for bringing me out to Georgetown to show off my skills.”
Born on December 26, 1999 to Vashawn Hopkinson and Stanton Rose Snr in the village of Kwakwani, the junior Stanton’s life was filled with many rewards as, after he signed with the Bounty Colts, he became the captain in 2015, and finished a National Tournament being the MVP, best scorer, and having the most assists.
He then went on to grab the MVP of “the Road to Mecca” tournament, and was the youngest to do it. This all led to him participating in the CBC, in which he scored 41 points against St Vincent.
From there he received a call from Baylor University, but was unable to gain acceptance because he did not have a high school diploma. However, a junior college in Texas called Jacksonville Jaguars gave him an offer.
This team was coached by Aaron Smith, and when Smith moved from Jacksonville to Panola College, Rose followed suit. From there the rest is history, and he is anxiously waiting to play his first pro basketball match and attain his dream of playing in the NBA.
