
With the absence of top horses Dataman and Olympic Kremlin, Master Z racing horse Stat claimed the top spot in the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred New Year’s Stakes at Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice, on Sunday.
Piloted by former champion jockey Colin Ross, Stat defeated One Sharp Cookie, with Companheiro Leal finishing second and third, respectively, in a one-mile race.
Three horses competed in the feature race, which saw the top horse winning a cash prize of GY$2 million, sponsored by Banks DIH.
Earlier in the day, Republicans started off the year with a bang in the L Class Open Non-winner of 2025 event open to Guyana-bred horses. It was a comfortable win for the Republican by more than three lengths. Miss Simram ran second while she’s a Monica ran third, followed by Citation.
Three D Movie pulled away easily in the second race, which was the K Class and Lower event. Heartland settled for second on the outside, while Donald Trump and Enemy Maker fought hard to secure third and fourth spots, respectively.
In the I3 & Lower open to three-year-old horses, Irish Eyes took the top spot. Ruff Time finished second, while Top Gun came third. Firebird ran in fourth position.
Under different ownership, we saw a new and improved Here Comes Heidi in Race 4 H2 and Lower Open for four-year-old West Indian-bred horses. Mulan was impressive but had to settle for second, while Just Exhale and Angry Birds rounded out the top four in that order.
Barbra showed her class in the F Class and four-year-old imported maidens in Guyana, which were also open to first-time starters of Brazilian-bred horses imported on or before September 2025. It was a dead heat for second with Frantic and Night Beacon.
In the three-year-old Guyana Derby, it was a clash of the titans. Summer Time emerged as the victor, while Monica Time came second. All My Time ran third, and Torpedo Jet ran fourth.
The three-year-old imported derby saw Moonlight Dancer winning, followed by Rock My World, Pharo Empress, and Adios Baby.
The next race day will be on February 1 at Port Mourant Turf Club. A win in that event will see horses secure their spot in the 2026 edition of the Guyana Cup.
