Still Champions!

… Hornets withstand Harvard’s threat to retain crown

Pepsi Hornets played another blinder to retain their crown as the country’s top Sevens team by winning the Hairoun Beer sponsored Guyana Rugby Football Union tournament on Saturday at the National Park.
Playing unbeaten throughout the day, Hornets withstood arguably their toughest opponent of the day in Trinidad and Tobago’s Harvard Rugby Team and won 10-0.
Do not be mistaken by the score line and assume it was a one-sided obliteration since the Trinidadians looked the most threatening unit on the offensive run. But what Hornets did well was maintain possession for most of the match which gave them the impetus to make the some dashing tries but no conversions.

Kevin McKenzie and Jonathon Felicine were to the duo who forced their ways to a try and help secure the $200,000 first place prize and the Trinidadians having to settle for $100,000. Hornets’ Abdulla Singleton won $20,000 for being the Most Valuable Player.
In third place-play-off, Panthers crushed Guyana Defence Force 24-0 with Damar Angus soring a try which was converted by Godfrey Broomes. Likewise, Lloyd Anderson made the try mark in which Angus converted. Joshua Griffith also scored from which Broomes converted.
The other teams to participate in the competition were Yamaha Caribs and Police Falcons.
