Stuart content with school cricket’s progress

– weather a huge setback

Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Territorial Development Officer (TDO) Colin Stuart said he was pleased with the development of the ongoing National Secondary Schools’ Cricket League.
Speaking with the ex-Guyana/West Indies pacer on Thursday, Guyana Times Sport was told that the GCB executive was thus far happy with the progress made to date regarding the schools’ competition which has been around for a few years.
Stuart said that among some of the positives to come out of the tournament this year, the organisation and dedication shown by some of the participating schools stood out as major improvements.

NSSCL action

“I think we found that some schools like Queen’s College, Bishops’ High, St Stanislaus and others have their teams ready ahead of the competitions. Team who don’t emphasise much on the sport is due to no Physical Education teachers at the schools or other teachers have to facilitate.”
However, the former speedster said that it was owing to those hurdles that the GCB has implemented the foundation course which helps teachers to be more familiar with the sport; thus creating a healthier learning environment for the students.
With the tourney running during the week, Stuart highlighted the weather as a major obstacle in running off a smooth tournament. He said rain has forced a number of play-offs around the country to be rescheduled and confirmed that two matches which were recently postponed would be played this weekend.
Concluding the interview, the ex-Windies player said that overall he was impressed with the dedication shown by the players, teachers, and schools in general.
Stuart added that he hoped the improvement will continue in the future as they continued to revamp cricket from the grassroots level. Meanwhile, the NSSCL is currently in its countrywide playoff stages, where winners of each zone or district will play each other.
