At least eleven persons have been transferred from the Port Mourant Public Hospital to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after two cars slammed head-on during the school rush hour on the Corentyne highway on Friday.
Injured are Vernon Pestana, 16; Jamal Kingston, 17; Shake Luke, 21; Delray Watts, 30; Alliana Ibrahim, 17; Naketa Coretta, 19; Rosanna Adams, 20; Beyonce Victor, 15; Senita Bahadoo, 22; Royden Gray, 31; and Savita Persaud, 44.
Guyana Times was told that two of the students are in critical condition, and that several doctors were called out as hospital staff members were pushed to the limit to cope with limited space, curious onlookers, and concerned parents and other relatives.
Most of the injured were cramped in the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital.
Earlier, the Port Mourant Hospital was overwhelmed as several vehicles kept turning up with injured persons following the accident.
Reports are that at about 16:00h on Friday, the two cars collided head-on on the Letter Kenny Public Road, Corentyne. An eyewitness said one of the cars was racing at the time of the collision.
This publication understands that motor car HC 6647, a silver-coloured Toyota Premio driven by someone identified as ‘Hooper’ and ‘Rosay,’ was heading in an easterly direction tailgating a green Toyota Premio reportedly being driven by one ‘David,’ also called ‘Boon’.
Both drivers were at the New Amsterdam Hospital awaiting treatment up to press time. Police are investigating the accident. (Andrew Carmichael)
