Students need to accept individuality in schools – UG VC

“We are on the cusp of a political season where a whole host of differences will be accentuated…we are not all Indo-Guyanese, we are not all Afro-Guyanese, we are not all Portuguese and Chinese decedents (but) we have got to be able to respect and celebrate who we are in the individuality that we bring to our society and our young people, our students will need to be the champions of maintaining that respect, beginning in the schools.”
Those were the sentiments shared by the University of Guyana (UG) Vice Chancellor and Principal, Professor Ivelaw Griffith during an award ceremony

hosted earlier this week.
While speaking about ethnic relations and how it affects children, Griffith pointed out that often times the manifestation of disrespect takes place in the home, while parents down-talk other ethnicities.
It is because of this that he urged the students who attended the event to be respectful to each other.
The Vice Chancellor also reminded the children that they are obligated to be honest in their schools, while condemning the recent incident where firefighters were caught stealing from an air-craft that crash-landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
He did not exempt the ranks from the Guyana Police Force who were also fingered in the theft of a model aircraft at an international conference.
He advised students that while they may want to pursue 15 or 20 subjects, achieving their goals is an important factor that they should be mindful of.
