In commemoration of World Poetry Day, the Learning Resource Development Unit of the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), in collaboration with the English Unit and the Measurement and Evaluation Unit, hosted a Festival of Poetry event, titled “Rising with Giants – Circle of Poets”, at the NCERD Library last Thursday.
Students of the New Campbellville Secondary, St Joseph High, Redeemer Primary, St Ambrose Primary, St Margaret’s Primary, and Winfer Garden’s Primary participated in the event, showcasing their talents through poetry and listening to recitals.
Among those who were present at the event and shared spoken word performances were Executive Director of the Waves of Emotions organisation, Carlene Gill-Kerr; culture activist, writer, performer and producer Natasha Van-Lewin–Troyer; and Lecturer 11 of the Cyril Potter College of Education, Sylvester McRae.
World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21 each year, after being so declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999.
