Sub-machine gun, foreign currency found on boat entering Guyana illegally

A 26-year-old Surinamese in now in Police custody after he was found with a sub-machine gun along with foreign currency at the Reno Boat Landing, Corriverton, Berbice, on Monday.

Reports are Customs Law Enforcement Officers were on patrol at the Number 79 Village Foreshore, Corriverton, Berbice, when they observed that a speed boat arrived from Suriname and moored at the landing. Five passengers were on board at the time.
According to Police, the officers intercepted the vessel and conducted a search on the passengers and their belongs. A search of the 26-year-old male, of Zuelen, Paramaribo, Suriname, unearthed one Beretta submachine gun, with the serial number defaced; 25 live 9mm ammunition, US$3000 and SR$6250.
The suspect was arrested and taken into Police custody at Springlands Police Station, along with the firearm and ammunition, which was marked, sealed and lodged by Customs Officers. (G9)
