Successes of the Lusignan Golf Club tourneys are testament to the club’s hard work
By Timothy Jaikarran
The Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) is definitely the place to be for professional and aspiring golfers, as it is Guyana’s only complete golf course.
Led by Patanjilee Persaud, the club has already taken major strides thus far as it aims to seek out corporate sponsors to not only make the club better known, but to promote the game of golf as well.
To date, the LGC has hosted the Panko Steel Fabrication Golf Tournament and the AgroServices-Amazon Planx Tournament, and will soon be hosting the Suresh Jagmohan Construction Services Tournament. These tournaments are a definite testament to the hard work of the Patanjilee Persaud-led committee as it continues to popularise the game of golf within all reaches in Guyana.
With onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, tough times descended on every sporting discipline in Guyana, but the Lusignan Golf Club was able to give back to its community as its members played their part in the fight against COVID-19. And now, although the pandemic is still prevalent, Guyana is in a somewhat better position to accommodate the restart of certain sports.
From this position, the LGC, a name synonymous with the game of golf, has taken full advantage of the opportunity to restart the playing of golf in Guyana, it being deemed COVID-19 compliant. The club promotes social distancing and observes all COVID-19 protocols during its competitions.
The club will have its hands full as it gears up to host the Guyana Tournament and the Lusignan Day Open tournament, which are expected to attract participation of many of Guyana’s top golfers. The recently concluded AgroServices-Amazon Planx tournament was graced with the participation of top players Max Persaud, Patanjilee Persaud, Avinash Persaud, Troy Cadogan, Ravi Persaud, Brian Hackett, veteran Maurice Solomon, Mike Mangal and Guillermo Escarraga, among others.
The 9-hole course is one that will challenge many – even the cream of the crop is wary of it – as it features thick grass, ditches, and small ponds that will cause golfers havoc; but who doesn’t love a good challenge in the game of golf? To top it all off, the club is planning to add another 5 holes to its course in the new year.
In short, golf is in Guyana to stay, and LGC members are working arduously to ensure that the year that was missed because of the dreadful pandemic is made up for, and that things are back on track where the beloved sport of golf is concerned.
