Suddie Market inundated due to continuous downpour

Several stall owners at the Suddie Market on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) went to ply their trade on Sunday but were greeted by several inches of water due to the continuous downpour on Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

This, however, did not deter the vendors from selling their produce, however, they had to do so within a short period of time since the water started to rise.
When Guyana Times visited the area, many vendors had their goods elevated several inches so that it could stay clear of the water. In addition, due to flooding, consumers were forced to discontinue shopping which ultimately resulted in stalls being closed prematurely.
One vendor, Savitree Lall, stated that the water started rising as early as 06:30h and within seconds, the water was about two inches above her ankles. She added that business was terrible because her regular customers turned away due to the water level.
“We will stay in here for a while to see how the business will roll but so far, I didn’t get sales for the morning because of water in the building. Most of us will leave… It all depends because we know people will not want to come in the water to buy greens and so. But we will wait a asthma inhalers bit and see if the water will drain out,” the vendor related.
The woman made a plea to the relevant authorities to clear the clogged drains and implement strategies to prevent flooding in the market. Attempts to get a comment from one of the Councillors who oversees the operations of the market proved futile.
